What is Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older (and some younger people with certain disabilities). It has four parts: Part A covers hospital care, Part B covers medical services, Part C (Medicare Advantage) is a private alternative that bundles A and B (and usually D), and Part D covers prescription drugs.

"Original Medicare" is Part A and Part B together, run directly by the government. From there you choose your path: stay on Original and add a Medigap (supplement) plus a Part D plan, or switch to a Medicare Advantage plan. These are two separate paths and they do not combine with each other.

Latin Prime is an independent agency. We sit down with you, explain the options we do offer in your area, and guide you so you decide, with the full picture and in your language.

Advantage (C) vs Medigap: two paths, they don't combine

This is the big decision. There's no single "best" for everyone; it depends on your health, your doctors and your budget.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Original + Medigap (supplement)
How it works
A private plan approved by Medicare that bundles A and B, almost always with Part D included.
You stay on Original (A and B) and add a Medigap that covers gaps, plus a separate Part D plan.
Drugs (Part D)
Usually already included in the plan.
Enrolled separately as Part D.
Doctor network
Typically uses a network; worth checking that your doctors are in it.
Accepted by any doctor nationwide who takes Medicare.
Monthly cost
Premium is often low; you pay more as you use services (copays).
Monthly Medigap premium; in exchange, fewer surprise costs when you get care.
Extras
Often includes dental, vision and wellness programs.
Focuses on covering Original's gaps; extras are handled separately.

Advantage and Medigap are not used at the same time: you pick one path. Switching later can come with conditions, so it pays to choose well from the start.

Why review your Medicare with us

  • We explain each part (A, B, C, D and Medigap) in plain language, no jargon and no fine print.
  • We compare Advantage vs Medigap with you based on your health, your doctors and your budget.
  • We check that your medications and doctors are covered before you enroll.
  • We flag your enrollment windows so you don't get hit with late-enrollment penalties.
  • We're an independent agency: the goal is your peace of mind, not pushing one plan.
  • Family-friendly guidance: often it's the kids helping mom or dad decide.

Common mistakes we help you avoid

  • Missing your enrollment window and getting stuck with a lifetime late-enrollment penalty.
  • Choosing a plan without confirming your trusted doctors are in the network.
  • Forgetting Part D and ending up with no drug coverage (with a possible separate penalty).
  • Assuming Advantage and Medigap can be held together: they are separate paths.
  • Picking only the lowest premium without looking at the copays when you actually get sick.

Is this for you?

It makes sense if...

  • You're turning 65 soon, or already have, and don't know where to start.
  • You have Medicare but don't understand what it covers or what you'd owe.
  • You're stuck between a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medigap.
  • You're helping your parents or an older relative organize their coverage.
  • You want to make sure your doctors and medications are covered.

Maybe not yet if...

  • You're well under 65 and don't have a qualifying condition.
  • You already have coverage through your job and don't plan to change it now.
  • You're looking for life insurance or final expense (that's a different talk, and we help with that too).

Frequently asked questions

What age can I enroll in Medicare?

Most people qualify at age 65. Some younger people with certain disabilities may also qualify. Your initial enrollment covers the 3 months before you turn 65, your birthday month, and the 3 months after.

What's the difference between Advantage and Medigap?

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a private plan that bundles A and B, almost always with drugs included, and usually uses a network. Medigap is a supplement that covers Original Medicare's gaps and works with any doctor who accepts Medicare; drugs are handled separately through Part D. They are two distinct paths and do not combine.

What happens if I enroll late?

If you don't enroll when you're first eligible and don't have a valid exception (like active coverage through a job), you could face late-enrollment penalties added to your premium, in some cases for life. That's why we review your dates with you.

Do I need Part D if I already have Advantage?

Most Medicare Advantage plans already include drug coverage (Part D). If you stay on Original Medicare with a Medigap, Part D is enrolled separately. We review this based on the path you choose.

Will my doctors and medications be covered?

It depends on the plan. Before you enroll, we confirm your trusted doctors are in the network and your medications are on the covered list, so there are no surprises.
